The story of the Matyó pattern
Matyó embroidery has a history of more than 200 years, with roots going back to the early 19th century, closely linked to the peasant culture of Mezőkövesd and its surroundings (the “Matyó Land”). Its most famous motifs are the richly decorated flowers – including the renowned “Matyó rose” – which symbolise the joy of life, fertility and love.
In 2012, Matyó embroidery was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, making it one of the most important and internationally recognised treasures of Hungarian folk art today. The colourful, intricate patterns not only adorned traditional clothing, but also served as symbols of community identity and togetherness.
