The story of the Matyó pattern

Matyó embroidery has a history of over 200 years, with roots dating back to the early 19th century, mainly tied to the peasant culture of Mezőkövesd and its surroundings (the "Matyó land"). Its most famous motifs are richly decorated flowers—including the famous "matyó rose"—which symbolize the joy of life, fertility, and love.

In 2012, Matyó embroidery was added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, making it one of the most important and internationally recognized treasures of Hungarian folk art today. The colorful, intricate patterns not only decorated folk costumes but also symbolized the community’s identity and unity.
