HISTORY
Europe Day is the celebration of "peace and unity in Europe," observed by the Council of Europe on May 5 and by the European Union on May 9.
Europe Day was first recognized by the Council of Europe and introduced in 1964. Later, the European Union also began celebrating its own Europe Day, in memory of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which first proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community. For this reason, the day is sometimes referred to as "Schuman Day" or "United Europe Day."
